Lutterloh System (The Golden Rule): Does It Work?

A few weeks ago, I decided to rechallenge myself. I pulled out fabric from my collection and the Lutterloh System, also known as The Golden Rule. You see, I heard about the system several months ago on YouTube. I found that whole idea very interesting. If you know me, I enjoy pattern making, but I still have so much to learn. I bought myself the system last fall, but the holidays came, and life got busy. Trying this Lutterloh System was perfect for having fun and creating a garment.

I decided to use a pretty button from my collection!

I chose a skirt because it would be the easiest to see if the system was all these people were saying it was. I also made a rule for myself. I had to have fun for the day. Letting go of the worry if it was going to be perfect, and I couldn’t blame myself for anything, enjoy myself.

The pattern pieces are on the back like above. You can use them as is or copy them as I do. By making a copy it keeps the original neat for future use.

I measured myself and made the pattern. I didn’t add seam allowances to the pattern. When cutting out the skirt, 1-inch seam allowances were added. Yes, 1 inch was overkill, but I did it out of concern for fit. I have experienced some fitting issues over my 50-some years of sewing. For the record, the seam allowance was trimmed off to half an inch during serging after seeing it was going to fit great.

As you can see, matching the windowpane plaid was needed. It had been several years since needing to match plaids, so here came another little challenge.

The skirt turned out great, and I love it! This skirt has already shown to be a great staple in my summer wardrobe. Over the 4th of July weekend, I had an opportunity to wear it out on a date with my husband, where we met friends for a glass of wine. I paired it with a white knit top from Talbot’s and a low-heeled saddle. The evening weather was hot. However, I was able to keep cool and have an elevated look to fit the rooftop bar we were at. I remember my husband saying let me take a photo of you to share, but I kept saying later, which never happened.
